The best enzyme cleaner for artificial grass is one made specifically for pet urine on turf. It should contain enzymes and live, pet-safe bacteria, so it keeps breaking down the uric acid crystals in the fibres and infill after you've sprayed it, rather than covering the smell with fragrance. Look for a concentrate you can apply generously across the whole area your dog uses, put it on in the cool part of the day so it stays damp long enough to work, and repeat regularly rather than waiting for the smell to come back. That's exactly what we stock urineFREE Artificial Grass Cleaner for, and the buying principles below apply whichever product you choose.

Why does artificial grass smell of dog urine?
The plastic blades aren't what smells. When your dog wees on artificial grass, the liquid drains away but leaves behind uric acid crystals that cling to the turf fibres, settle into the infill and soak into the base underneath. Those crystals don't dissolve in plain water, so a hose-down shifts the surface and leaves the source behind.
Heat and moisture then reactivate them. That's why turf can seem fine in the morning and reek by mid-afternoon on a sunny day, or straight after a shower of rain. The smell hasn't appeared from nowhere. It's been sitting there all along, waiting for the right conditions.
What does an enzyme cleaner actually do on artificial grass?
Enzymes are biological catalysts. A urine-specific enzyme cleaner targets the proteins, urea and uric salts that cause lingering odour and break them down into simpler, odourless compounds that can rinse or drain away.
A bio-enzymatic cleaner like urineFREE goes a step further. As well as enzymes, it contains friendly, pet-safe bacteria that keep digesting residue after application. On turf that matters, because urine is spread through fibres, infill and base, places you can't scrub or blot.
In our guide to enzyme cleaners for dog urine indoors, we explain why we prefer hydrogen peroxide (Odarid) for carpet and underlay: it works in seconds and doesn't depend on live bacteria. Outdoors on a whole lawn, the trade-off flips. You want something that keeps working through the infill over time, and a slower, ongoing biological clean suits turf better than a fast one-off reaction.
Enzymes plus live, pet-safe bacteria. One 750ml eco-pouch makes 5 litres of solution. Pets can play on the turf once it's dry.
What should I look for in the best enzyme cleaner for artificial grass?
Made for urine on turf, not a general outdoor cleaner
Patio and deck cleaners are built to shift dirt and algae. They'll make the surface look tidier but do very little to the urine salts in the infill. Look for a product that says plainly that it targets pet urine on synthetic grass.
Enzymes and live bacteria, not enzymes alone
Enzyme-only products work while they're wet and stop once they dry. A formula with live, beneficial bacteria keeps going after application, which is what you want for a large area you'll only treat every few weeks.
A concentrate, so you can treat the whole area properly
Turf needs volume. A small trigger spray won't reach the base layer of a dog run, let alone a whole lawn. A concentrate you dilute (urineFREE's 750ml pouch makes 5 litres) means you can soak the problem zones instead of misting the top.
No masking fragrance
Dogs can smell residue long after you can't, and they'll keep going back to the same spot while any remains. Fragrance just layers a sweet smell over the urine. You want the source gone.
Safe for kids and pets once dry
The whole point of artificial grass is that the family uses it. Choose a non-toxic formula with clear instructions, so the lawn is back in action as soon as it's dry.
Enzyme cleaner, hydrogen peroxide or disinfectant: which is best for turf?
| Type of cleaner | Removes urine at the source? | Keeps working after you spray? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bio-enzymatic (enzymes + live bacteria), e.g. urineFREE | Yes | Yes | Whole lawns, dog runs, regular maintenance |
| Enzyme-only spray | Yes, while it stays wet | No, stops once dry | Small, fresh spots |
| Hydrogen peroxide, e.g. Odarid | Yes, within 30 to 60 seconds | No, it's a one-off reaction | Indoors: carpet, underlay, concrete, timber |
| Disinfectant or bleach | No, kills germs but leaves uric acid crystals | No | Not recommended for turf odour |
| Scented deodoriser | No, masks only | No | A quick freshen-up before guests |

How do I use an enzyme cleaner on artificial grass properly?
- Clear the area. Pick up solid waste, leaves and loose debris so the cleaner reaches the turf, not the mess on top of it.
- Rinse first if it's dry. A light hose-down helps the solution spread evenly and carries it down into the infill.
- Dilute the concentrate with water as directed on the label.
- Apply in the cooler part of the day. Early morning or evening is best. Enzymes and bacteria need moisture to work, and a hot NZ afternoon can dry the turf before they've finished.
- Soak, don't mist. Be generous on your dog's favourite spots, then treat the wider area too. Urine spreads further through the base than it looks from above.
- Let it air dry. Don't rinse it straight off. Give it time to work, then pets and kids can go back on once it's dry.
- Repeat regularly. Little and often beats a big clean-up once the smell is back. In summer, or with more than one dog, treat more often.

What should I avoid when cleaning dog urine off artificial grass?
- Bleach and strong disinfectants. They don't break down uric acid crystals, and they can kill the beneficial bacteria in an enzyme cleaner. If you must disinfect, rinse well and leave a gap before treating.
- Relying on rain or the hose. Water dilutes fresh urine, which helps, but it won't shift the crystals that are already there. Rain can actually make an old smell worse for a while.
- Treating only the obvious patch. If the smell keeps coming back, the contaminated area is almost always bigger than you think.
- Ignoring drainage. If urine pools under the turf, no cleaner can fully keep up. Poor drainage or compacted infill is worth getting looked at.
Our hydrogen peroxide formula for carpet, rugs and hard floors. Breaks urine odour down in 30 to 60 seconds.
Frequently asked questions
Is urineFREE an enzyme cleaner?
Yes. urineFREE is a bio-enzymatic cleaner. It combines natural enzymes with live, pet-safe bacteria, so it breaks down the uric acid crystals in turf fibres and infill and keeps working after it's applied.
Why does my artificial grass smell worse when it's hot or after rain?
Heat and moisture reactivate the dried uric acid crystals left in the infill and base. The smell was there all along. The weather just releases it. Breaking the crystals down is the only lasting fix.
Is enzyme cleaner safe for dogs on artificial grass?
A pet-safe formula like urineFREE is made with non-toxic ingredients, and pets can go back on the turf once it has dried. Always follow the label directions.
How often should I use an enzyme cleaner on artificial grass?
Regular treatment works better than waiting for the smell. Most households treat every few weeks, more often in summer or with more than one dog. Treat your dog's favourite spot more often than the rest of the lawn.
Can I use bleach on artificial grass to get rid of dog urine smell?
We don't recommend it. Bleach doesn't break down uric acid crystals, can be harsh on turf and runoff, and will kill the beneficial bacteria if you later use an enzyme cleaner.
